Managing Classification Levels

A classification level is a named sensitivity level that can be applied to a Confluence page.

Confluence admins and space admins can use classification levels to make content handling expectations clearer for page editors and page readers.

The following example set can be adapted to match your organization’s policies.

LevelPurposeSuggested visual tone
Pending ClassificationDefault state when a page still needs to be reviewed or classified.Neutral gray or soft blue
PublicContent that can be shared broadly according to your organization’s policies.Green or light blue
InternalContent intended for employees or internal teams.Blue
ConfidentialSensitive content that should be handled carefully.Orange
RestrictedHighly sensitive content that requires limited access.Red or strong orange

For each classification level, admins may define:

  • Level name.
  • Description.
  • Color.
  • Page header style.
  • Permission guidance.
  • Default classification behavior.

TODO: Confirm product behavior. Confirm the exact list of configurable fields in the final UI.

LevelExample guidance
Pending ClassificationThis page has not been classified yet. Treat the content carefully until a classification level is assigned.
PublicThis page is suitable for broad sharing according to your organization’s policies.
InternalThis page is intended for internal audiences. Do not share externally unless approved.
ConfidentialThis page contains sensitive information. Review access and sharing carefully.
RestrictedThis page contains highly sensitive information. Access should be limited to approved users or groups.

Use names and descriptions that match the language already used by your organization.

Do not use color alone to communicate classification. The level name and guidance should remain visible and understandable.
