Managing Classification Levels
Section titled “Managing Classification Levels”A classification level is a named sensitivity level that can be applied to a Confluence page.
Confluence admins and space admins can use classification levels to make content handling expectations clearer for page editors and page readers.
Typical level structure
Section titled “Typical level structure”The following example set can be adapted to match your organization’s policies.
| Level | Purpose | Suggested visual tone |
|---|---|---|
| Pending Classification | Default state when a page still needs to be reviewed or classified. | Neutral gray or soft blue |
| Public | Content that can be shared broadly according to your organization’s policies. | Green or light blue |
| Internal | Content intended for employees or internal teams. | Blue |
| Confidential | Sensitive content that should be handled carefully. | Orange |
| Restricted | Highly sensitive content that requires limited access. | Red or strong orange |
What admins define
Section titled “What admins define”For each classification level, admins may define:
- Level name.
- Description.
- Color.
- Page header style.
- Permission guidance.
- Default classification behavior.

Example reader guidance
Section titled “Example reader guidance”| Level | Example guidance |

| Pending Classification | This page has not been classified yet. Treat the content carefully until a classification level is assigned. |
| Public | This page is suitable for broad sharing according to your organization’s policies. |
| Internal | This page is intended for internal audiences. Do not share externally unless approved. |
| Confidential | This page contains sensitive information. Review access and sharing carefully. |
| Restricted | This page contains highly sensitive information. Access should be limited to approved users or groups. |
Notes for admins
Section titled “Notes for admins”Use names and descriptions that match the language already used by your organization.
Do not use color alone to communicate classification. The level name and guidance should remain visible and understandable.
